Wimbledon: The Ultimate Guide on What You'll Need and Where to Stay

Posted by Veronica Morozova on

Every year, the world-class sporting event transforms London’s sleepy, south-western suburb into a buzzing affair fit for royalty (literally). But if it’s your first time visiting the bonafide tennis championship, the ordeal may feel somewhat daunting. For starters, if you’ve no knowledge of London’s areas and its surroundings, you run the risk of staying in less-than-picturesque (to put it mildly) parts of the city. And then there’s the ever-pertinent dilemma of where to get ahold of things you’ll likely need, but don't want to lug all the way to London. The good news is that we’ve done most of the the heavy lifting for you - all you gotta do is turn up.

WHERE TO STAY:

Wimbledon is not central London. In fact, it’s a whopping 8 miles away from Piccadilly Circus (which is smack bang central). Thus, if you’re visiting London primarily to watch the tennis championship, we strongly urge you to stay locally in the area. Not only will you get more bang for your buck, but you’ll also avoid the hell-ish commute across the city. Here’s some ideas of where you can stay:

  • If you’re feeling…. quintessentially English: This charming semi-detached Victorian house is situated in the heart of the leafy Wimbledon Village.  It sleeps six people, so is roomy enough for a small group of friends. The added bonus is it’s only a ten-minute walk from the tennis courts,

  • If you’re feeling… a little bit of luxury: A gorgeous, two-bed apartment in a secure, gated development moments from Wimbledon Village, with the green Wimbledon Common literally on your doorstep.

  • If you’re feeling….modern simplicity: This newly refurbished, two-bedroom flat has all the hallmarks of a simple, contemporary and cosy home. Just a short stroll away from the Wimbledon Village and the tennis courts, it’s perfect for a smaller group of people visiting the championship.

  • If you’re feeling...a home away from home: If you’re bringing the whole big fam along with you, why not settle in a home away from home for the duration of the championship? This larger than average, four-bed garden house comes with a huge living room and kitchen and is a short distance away from Wimbledon Common.

  • If you’re feeling… like a boutique hotel: A stone’s throw away from the Wimbledon tennis courts, this gorgeous little hotel is luxurious enough to make you feel pampered but small enough to be cosy.

HOW TO NAVIGATE THE COURTS:

Wimbledon can be a bit of a maze for first-timers, but luckily, their official website provides a handy map of the grounds. We strongly urge you to print one out and keep an extra copy in your pocket.

OTHER ESSENTIALS:

Wimbledon can be a pricey experience, with ground admission tickets costing north of £20, so be prepared to budget accordingly.

If you’re staying in the area and find yourself lacking basic essentials, like a decent coffee machine, an ironing board or even an extra air mattress for the unexpected guest at your short-term rental abode, you should try out Rentuu - a super easy to use online platform that lets you hire everything for as little or as long as you need it.

Another common problem Wimbledon-going families face is managing their kids' schedules and finding convenient ways of getting around the grounds with toddlers in tow. If you're visiting the championship from abroad or a different city, chances are you won't be wanting to tow all your kids' bulky essentials.
Again, this is where Rentuu comes in to save you from the pain of asking around for a high-quality stroller, crib or car seat. Rentuu only works with trusted businesses, so you can rest assured that your kids' comfort and safety is in good hands. And best yet, you won't be left wondering whether the items you've chosen to hire will turn up in a usable condition - everything on Rentuu's website is quality controlled, sufficiently sanitised and 100% fit for use.

KICK BACK AND ENJOY

Wimbledon is just as much about the tennis as it is the buzzing atmosphere. So go ahead and pick your nicest pastel coloured polo shirt, stock up on the Pimms and enjoy!
